The classic Burberry, whether on trenchcoats or women's umbrellas, handbags and scarves, is still very popular among those who can afford it. But as all great fashion houses must, it has developed its range to meet the needs of an ever younger market who have money to burn and ed hardy hoodies an eye for style.

The company was founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry who opened up his own shop in Basingstoke.

By 1870 it was known as an emporium, mostly specialising in outdoor wear.

In 1880 the company invented the gaberdine, a breathable weatherproof, and 11 years later the first London store was opened in the Haymarket, where the company's Dimmable LED Down Light K1004 - 3x1W / 3x3W headquarters have remained. As a sign of its quality, in 1901 Burberry was commissioned to design the new uniform for British officers, then later the first man to reach the South Pole and the first to cross the Antarctic from coast to coast were both kitted out in Burberry. In 1955 Burberry was awarded the Royal Warrant.

The check design that
embroidered patches has become synonymous with the label started off as the lining to trenchcoats in 1924 and only in 1967 did it move on to umbrellas, luggage and scarves.
