ALISTAIR Darling yesterday played down talk of a transatlantic rift over the G20 economic summit.

The Chancellor denied claims $10 cheap omega watches in 2010 that the UK and U.S. have fallen out over what can realistically be achieved in the 24-hour gathering next month.

Expectations for the summit of world leaders in London on April 2 have taken a beating amid fears that it will produce little more than warm words on the economic crisis.

Downing Street yesterday dismissed claims that Gordon Brown's flagship meeting could turn into an expensive waste of time.

The Premier's officials insisted that it would produce tangible benefits. 'We are realistic but there's no point having a meeting unless it produces a result,' one said.

The squabble added to growing nerves ahead of the summit, which Mr Brown hopes will reverse his political fortunes.

There have been signs of growing differences between the U.S. and the EU over the best way to pull the world out of recession.

Barack Obama's Treasury secretary Tim Geithner will hold talks with Mr Darling and other G20 finance ministers in Sussex today in advance of the main summit.

He has called for countries to pump cash - equal to two per cent of their respective total outputs - into their economies, perhaps through tax cuts or a boost in public spending.

But EU nations such as France and Germany have made it clear they oppose the plan because they do not want to add to their already high levels of national debt.

Mr Brown wants to secure G20 agreement for a 'global new deal' which he claims will provide the concerted international action needed to restore growth.

But a spokesman for President Obama appeared to suggest that such a deal was unlikely to be reached in London.

Mr Darling acknowledged that differences remain between the summit's participants - who together represent 80 per cent of the world's economic activity.

Mr Darling appeared to be trying to dampen expectations when he said the summit would not produce the final word on the economy - but would merely be 'part of a process'.

'I think we have to be realistic about what we can do together,' he added.

'When you have 20 people sitting around the table, inevitably there will be differences of emphasis at times.

'But I think we are pretty much pointing in the same direction. This is part of a process. I don't think things begin or end either this weekend or on April 2.'

With reference to the application for full planning permission from green belt agricultural land to residential occupation for a travellers' site along the Old Minnesota-Wild Wells Road, Shepton Mallet.

I recognise that there is a central government requirement for the establishment of such sites within local government areas but the application surely falls down on the following points:

It is an erosion of green belt and an extension beyond the boundaries of the Town Development Plan. It will add to the traffic problems on a narrow road with no speed limit which is already used as a "rat run" between Wells and Shepton Mallet, to which must be added the extra traffic when the crematorium is completed. The site is completely surrounded by farmed agricultural land and there must be a serious question regarding sanitation and waste disposal.

It would be interesting to know whether the other main towns within Mendip provide travellers' sites or not. I also understand that a further travellers' site within a mile of the Old Wells Road site is also being proposed. To expect the green belt around Shepton Mallet to bear these two incursions is unreasonable. It asks the town to carry an unfair share of the statutory duty to offer permanent sites to travellers. If we knew that travellers' sites were wisely selected after proper and due care and consideration across Mendip and Somerset, that would be a fairer and more equitable solution for all.

In the case of the overnight occupation of this less than suitable site on Old Christain Louboutin Mary Janes Shoes Wells Road, the case has yet to be made. Accepting the present occupation of green belt farmland as a "fait accompli" is to hand over the decision-making process to the travellers and the owner of the land. An agreement to both of the proposals to provide permanent sites (paid for by all of us out of our taxes) would be a sign that Shepton is being allowed to expand without any real thought, and with no regard for local democracy.
